The fonds consists of daybooks, account books and a ledger. The daybooks give details of their work such as items produced, the names of customers, charges, and materials used. They include repairs. There is also information on caskets and funerals, with names and dates. Account books include a list of funerals from 1867-1885 with names and ages of deceased. The ledger has a separate index. "The Cabinetmakers Assistant" published by Blackies in Glasgow, Scotland in 1853, containing furniture designs, is also included.

  • Deeds and leases for properties in Saint John, Grand Falls, Buctouche, Woodstock and in Sunbury, Queen's, Carleton and Kent counties, - 1845-1866. As well, there are Sheriff's sales of property in Victoria county, 1859 and 1860.
  • There are 2 bonds for debts to John Armstrong, 1855 and 1865.
  • There is a bill of sale for wooden boats to John Armstrong, 1968 and a certificate of ownership of shares in the barque, "Jennie Armstrong" and registered ownership of the brig "Maggie.
  • There is a confirmation of discharge, 1875, which was John Armstrong's official discharge in his declaration of insolvency. The actual date of the confirmation was 29 November 1875 at the City of Saint John in the County of Saint John. This document was prepared by S.R. Thomson, Solicitor to the Insolvent

This book was originally begun as an exercise book by "Master R. Mowat May 28th 1839" and contains arithmetic exercises. The book has been turned over and the back contains a running account of charges for painting and other work on various ships. The work is specified and the names of the captains and the ships are given.

It includes minutes of meetings, correspondence, letterbooks, general ledgers, day books, cash books, accounts receivable and accounts payable ledgers, order books, sales invoices, survey records, bills of lading and other shipping records, invoices, accounts, receipts, bank books, cancelled cheques, draft notes, and time books. Family records include correspondence, diaries, photographs, and material pertaining to the Independent Order of Foresters.

There are also brochures, labels, advertising boards, catalogues of various suppliers, almanacs, grindstone and rock samples. Lastly the fonds includes several annual reports and statements of the Dominion Steel Corp. and British Empire Steel Corporation (1920s), issues of the journals, The Maritime Merchant (1920s) and the Contract Record & Engineering Review (1910s), and a copy of an unpublished thesis entitled, "The Cumberland Basin grindstone industry by James D.
