Lemont (family)

  • CA PANB MC266
  • Fonds
  • 1895-1902

This fonds documents the business activities of Martin Lemont, Sr. and his sons William Lemont and Martin Lemont, Jr. It consists of financial records for Lemont & Sons, a daily journal for William Lemont's insurance business, and a file of newspaper and magazine clippings.

There are two ledgers for Lemont & Sons, dating from 1895-1902. The first ledger (1895-1897) offers daily and weekly totals of cash and credit sales, along with the net profit totals for each. The ledger also includes daily and weekly totals for sales and credit transactions by types of merchandise sold (furniture and woodenware, crockery and china, glassware etc.), as well as totals for goods sold at auctions and on bargain Saturdays. The second ledger (1898-1902) records daily and weekly totals for sales and credit transactions by types of merchandise sold (furniture and woodenware, crockery and china, and sundries). There are also monthly and yearly totals for cash and credit sales from "fancy tables upstairs" that include sums for sales, costs, and profits (1901-1902) as well as monthly and yearly totals for general cash sales that include sums for sales, first payment, and balance of accounts (1895-1902).

The fonds also contains William Lemont's daily journal for his insurance business (September 1900-May 1903). He records the names of potential customers, their place of residence, occasionally their occupation, the names of insurance companies holding their policies (if any), the date insurance was taken out, and reasons for refusing to purchase an insurance policy. Beginning in October 1900, Lemont begins using this journal, to some extent, as a personal diary. He records details of business trips, family gatherings, and political rallies attended among other activities and events. The journal also includes a listing of Fredericton voters, for uptown and downtown, dating to 1900, that was clipped from the local press; a listing of fire insurance and accident insurance companies operating in Canada along with the names of agents; and a listing of medical doctors practising in York County about the turn of the 20th century.

Lastly the fonds includes a few clippings from newspapers and magazines on a number of subjects seemingly of personal interest to the collector(s).

MC8/ The G Club sous-fonds

  • CA QHINB MC4111 / MC8
  • Subfonds
  • 1998-2002

Greg Ericson opened The G Club, located at 377 King St., on the third floor, with two business partners on the second week of September 1998; the club closed 4 July 2003.
In 1998, there were no other gay clubs in Fredericton, and Ericson and his partners opened a bar that would serve the community. Ericson wanted a space that offered product excellence (in the form of a variety of liquors and original cocktails), as well as a comfortable / welcoming social space for LGBTQ+ folks. Employees were encouraged to greet newcomers and introduce them to the regular patrons, welcoming them into the space before the dance music began. A competition was held to name the club, and “The G Club” was chosen for its ambiguity: it could be 'The Good Club', 'The Gay Club', but many patrons referred to it as 'The G-Spot', as the club was “on the third floor, and difficult to find”- Greg Ericson.
City by-laws require bars to close their doors at 2:00AM, The G Club patrons would be getting out at the same time as patrons from other clubs- which caused a few fights to break out, and LGBTQ+ folks didn't feel safe returning home. To address this issue, the club would often remain open until the other bar crowds dispersed. Included in the collection are a number of Suspension Notices issued by the New Brunswick Department of Public Safety, for violating the Liquor Control Act by remaining open past 2:00AM. Included in this collection are invoices and a letter from Chippin Ventures Inc. It was Ericson’s perception that Chippin Ventures was particularly aggressive towards The G. Club, looking to bill and fine the business wherever they could.

McFarlane Wagon Company

  • CA PANB MC68
  • Fonds
  • 1915-1926

This fonds consists of a folder of documents that were once kept in a three-ring binder. The documents appear to have been used to estimate the cost of parts and labour for manufacturing wagons by the McFarlane Wagon Company. There are lists of the prices of raw materials and parts, with detailed notations of the time taken to build specific parts of wagons. Also included are some detailed designs for wagons and wagon parts for many different purposes, such as the Cornwallis slovens, sloven wagons, farm wagons, crank wagons, spring slovens, gigger wagons, grocery express wagons, lumber trucks, mill wagons, and dump wagons. Sometimes the name of the customer who ordered the wagon is given. Some of the designs are signed with the initials J.W. McF., probably for James Walter McFarlane. A few invoices from suppliers and lists of materials purchased from suppliers are also included.

MILTON F. GREGG, V.C. FONDS

  • CA PANB MC498
  • Fonds
  • 1880, 1892-1991

These documents were the personal papers of Milton Gregg. They were not the papers of the offices which he held. They include his copies of a few of his many reports from official positions and well as his personal observations to family on several assignments. The Biographical Sketch information above was gleaned from this fonds.

The fonds also included many private papers, including several hundred letters during the First World War to his fiancée in Canada, personal correspondence to family, and observations on his work in Indonesia in the form of letters to his sister. He and his family kept clippings of his exploits from his time as a student at the Provincial Normal School, throughout his life, and until his death and funeral.

After his death, his wife, Erica Deichmann Gregg, continued to add to the collection of clippings. Various organizations kept in contact with Erica Gregg after his death, notably the Victoria Cross Association and the Royal Canadian Regiment Association. Some files continue beyond his death in 1978.

The fonds contains 1656 photographs from ca.1880 to 1988 and cover all aspects of his life. It addition, it contains a number of photo albums, including 2 which were presented to him in Indonesia, one of which graphically shows the affects of yaws on the children in that country. Also in the photo series are images of Gregg with King Edward VIII, King George VI, and Queen Elizabeth II. Although George V presented him with the MC and VC, there are no photos with that monarch. There are also photos with Lord Beaverbrook, Senator John F. Kennedy, Golda Meir and several Canadian prime ministers.
