"Beginners please; my life in amateur theatre"; by Bert Williams

This is a photocopy of a bound volume of Bert William's "Beginners Please My Life in Amateur Theatre". The work discusses his early life, including growing up in a working-class neighbourhood of Bolton, Lancashire, England; attending school; and working at various occupations while a young boy -- in a factory, in a cotton mill, and for several cinemas. He also comments on his early years in amateur theatre, the Workers' Educational Society, the First World War (Great War), the Second World War, and his work in adult theatre, both in England and in Canada, as a director, actor, and stage hand . The volume also includes photocopies of newspaper clippings, correspondence, and theatre programmes.

The 88 page photocopied journal of Violet Goldsmith documents her life from 1900-1906, including the years she spent at the Fredericton Normal School and UNB.

She records university events and social activities and makes many references to her friend Mary Matilda (Tillie) Winslow. She also comments upon her personal life and her experiences as a school teacher.

This fonds contains mostly correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, and exhibition catalogues relating to Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Canadian artist and long-time friend of Madge Smith. This fonds also contains 70 photographs taken by Smith during the late 1930s. Subjects of these photographs include places, such as the Fredericton Golf Course and the Oromocto Flats; winter scenes; and animals, such as horses and cats.

This fonds documents Raymond Fraser's life as a writer of poetry and prose beginning in the 1960s. It also highlights his relationships with business associates, family, and friends, including some who are or were part of the Canadian literary scene. In addition, this fonds sheds light on his personal activities, most notably his involvement with The Flat Earth Society, which he co-founded with Leo Ferrari and Alden Nowlan in 1970.

It contains business and personal correspondence, literary manuscripts and typescripts of published and unpublished works, published copies of newspaper articles, reviews of published works, and newspaper clippings. A few personal and business records, including royalty statements, income tax returns, copyright and business registrations, school records, and materials relating to The Flat Earth Society are also included.

This fonds documents the writing career of Michael O. Nowlan, as well as much of his work as a teacher of English and advocate of Canadian literature. The fonds consists largely of correspondence to and from Nowlan, and drafts and notes for articles and books. Also included are committee minutes, newspaper clippings, and a few photographs. Despite the existence of separate "Correspondence" files, almost every file in the fonds contains correspondence, usually associated with the material in the file.

David H. Walker

This fonds documents David H. Walker's 45-year literary career as author of 19 novels, over 100 short stories, and several works of non-fiction -- most notably, an autobiography, Lean, Wind, Lean. It also reflects his military career in The Black Watch (1931-47), including his internment in German prison camps during the Second World War. The fonds also includes material relating to Walker's family life, his personal relationships, his friendship with Lord Wavell, and his travels in Canada and abroad as well as several awards and honours.

It includes incoming and outgoing correspondence, notes, draft manuscripts, draft scripts, agreements with publishers and film makers, published short stories, reviews, royalty statements, and publicity material as well as copies of speeches, travel and family photographs, biographical material, mementos, and awards. Artifacts include: commission in The Black Watch, Governor-General's awards for fiction (1952 and 1953), and warrants making Walker a Member of the Order of the British Empire and a Member of the Order of Canada.
