1 photograph of American sportsman John Taylor Arms fishing at Wade's Sporting Camps (Blackville). John Taylor Arms (1887-1953) in New York City was a noted graphic artist best known for his etchings of medieval French architecture.

This fonds documents Madge Smith's professional activities as an art dealer and photographer over several decades. It includes business and personal correspondence with art galleries, art centres, museums, art clubs, and art associations, as well as with prominent writers, artists, and politicians, including Lord Beaverbrook, Molly Bobak, Bruno Bobak, Miller Brittain, Kjeld Deichmann, Erica Deichmann Gregg, Hugh John Flemming, Milton Gregg, Dorothy Gregg, Lucy Jarvis, Pegi Nichol MacLeod, Alden Nowlan, Leonard O'Brien, Charles G. D. Roberts, Frances Roberts, and Goodridge Roberts.

The bulk of the fonds consists of more than 1200 photographs taken by Madge Smith of landmarks, buildings, residences, ceremonies, celebrations, or street scenes of Fredericton and surrounding area and of communities located on the Miramichi and the Fundy Coast -- Saint John, St. Andrews, Grand Manan, and Campobello. A number of photographs of Pegi Nichol MacLeod are also included. The photographs have been transferred to the Photographic Section (P120).

There are also printed materials on writers and artists, scrapbooks, guest books, newspaper clippings, and copies of bills and receipts.

Fonds consists of early art works of Edwin Tappan Adney including cast and life drawings completed while he was a member of the Students Art League in New York around 1885-86. Fonds also contains other drawings, sketches, and notes on historical heraldry.

This fonds consists largely of thank you notes received by the Fredericton Art Club from Lord and Lady Beaverbrook and/or his second wife, the former Lady Dunn, for gifts or greetings sent. Secretaries or other agents of the Beaverbrook family wrote a few letters on behalf of the family. The fonds also includes drafts of some of the letters written by the club to the Beaverbrook family.

Also included are the replies the Club received from Lord Beaverbrook and/or his wife, and from Harriet Irving and Olymbia Kedros respecting invitations to special events. Of particular interest is a handwritten copy of a tribute to Lord Beaverbrook.

Arrangement is chronological.

  • Two copies of "Signposts of History" by Squires, read before the Fortnightly Club in 1958;
  • a typescript of "Historic Sites of New Brunswick" by Squires under the auspices of the New Brunswick Historic Sites Advisory Board;
  • a typescript of "The Indians of Acadia" by Squires (published by the museum in 1972); and
  • a typescript of "A Naturalist in New Brunswick" by Squires, 1968.

Reverend Hiram A. Cody

This fond of Hiram. A Cody is comprised of two newspaper articles, parts one and two of an article written by Ted Jones, as well as two copies of an address given to the Kings County Historical Society by A. P. Hetherington, in 1972, titled Life and Times of H. A. Cody.

Reverend Cody was both a pastor and a literary figure, having prolifically written in many forms such as plays, short stories, novels, sermons ans serializations. He was born on the Washademoak, New Brunswick in 1872. He moved to the Yukon in 1904 as a travelling missionary, and in 1909 him and his family moved back to New Brunswick and to the rectorship of St. James' Church in Saint John. In 1927 Rev. Cody was appointed Archdeacon of Saint John. He died in 1984 at the age of 75.
