The fonds consists of correspondence between McFarlane family members. Most of the letters are addressed to Emmeretta Amanda McFarlane, who is usually called Amanda in the letters. Her brother's letters describe life in the California woods in the early 1880s, with comments about wages, the climate and latterly, his wife's strokes and eventual death. Letters from other family members discuss mostly news of family and friends.

This fonds contains the monthly reports of keepers at Long Eddy fog alarm from 1874-1946. It includes records of the weather, the stores and supplies ordered, the repairs made, and the hours the fog alarm was operating.

2 scrapbooks, clippings etc. of general rather than local interest. A book of agricultural reports was used for one scrapbook and the other used an 1874 report of schools in the province. Many of the items were clipped from papers that were published before Mr. Coakley was born. Dan Coakley (1875-1966) lived for a time at 'Lilac Cottage' where he was a neighbour and friend of the Stuart family.

The contents include: correspondence ; invoices in alphabetical order, with catalogues and advertising and ledgers from suppliers ; day books and journals in chronological order ; Telegrams in alphabetical order by local resident name 1916-1929 ; Registered letter ledger for Seal Cove Post Office 1911-1914 ; Journal for recording telephone calls 1953-1954 ; and original fish can labels two different types.
