Survey of underwater historic resources

  • CA MNBM ID458
  • Fonds
  • 1973-1976

The fonds consists of maps, monthly reports for the survey of underwater historical resources and various reports relating to the survey. There are monthly reports, 1974-1976 and some photocopies of monthly reports from 1973. The reports describe methods and list publications and institutions consulted. Some include drawings of artifacts and the January and February 1976 reports include colour photographs and descriptions of china from the wreck of barque "Wallace" lost in 1841 and another vessel, possibly "Duke of Kent" wrecked near the Dixon Rocks in the Murr Ledges, Grand Manan Island, N.B. The June 1975 report includes underwater colour photos of "Wallace", "Mavourneen" and "Hestia" wreckage sites.

There are maps prepared by Eric Allaby. One titled "Some vessels wrecked around the coast of New Brunswick" pinpoints the exact locations ships went down mostly off the southwest coast. The names and types of the ships are included in a key with the date they were wrecked. There are ships as early as "Le Machault" in 1760 and as recent as the schooner "Kings County" in 1936. Other maps and diagrams include wreckage layout of the "S.S. Hestia", elevation of the brig "Glide", wreck layouts of the barque "Mavourneen" and the vessel "Britannia" and site assembly and elevation of the "Pocosi".

A report of a seminar to discuss the survey, held on Grand Manan on 10-15 June 1974 is included. There is also a copy of "The Role of Canadian Conservation in Underwater Heritage", 4 April 1975, a presentation to the Advisory Board for the Atlantic Region, Canadian Conservation Institute on the need to conserve New Brunswick shipwrecks. It includes diagrams and maps about the wreck of "Glide".
