Crouse Family Fonds

This fonds consists of records pertaining to Phoebe Ann Crouse, Samuel Crouse, Myles Hayward Crouse, and Ellsworth Burtus Crouse. The bulk of the fonds consists of correspondence written by Myles Hayward Crouse and Ellsworth Burtus Crouse to their mother, Phoebe Ann Crouse, while they were serving in the Canadian Army during World War I. These letters offer insights into living conditions overseas, trench warfare, food, homesickness, communications from home, illness, wounded soldiers, and conscription, as well as army leaves and travel in Britain.

The fonds also contains a few records pertaining to Samuel Crouse's work with the C.P.R., including the Canadian Railway War Board, Wage Agreement No. 2 (1918) and a C.P.R. circular concerning Spanish Influenza (1918). A postcard of the troop transport ship R.M.S. Olympic [191-?] is also included.

David H. Walker

This fonds documents David H. Walker's 45-year literary career as author of 19 novels, over 100 short stories, and several works of non-fiction -- most notably, an autobiography, Lean, Wind, Lean. It also reflects his military career in The Black Watch (1931-47), including his internment in German prison camps during the Second World War. The fonds also includes material relating to Walker's family life, his personal relationships, his friendship with Lord Wavell, and his travels in Canada and abroad as well as several awards and honours.

It includes incoming and outgoing correspondence, notes, draft manuscripts, draft scripts, agreements with publishers and film makers, published short stories, reviews, royalty statements, and publicity material as well as copies of speeches, travel and family photographs, biographical material, mementos, and awards. Artifacts include: commission in The Black Watch, Governor-General's awards for fiction (1952 and 1953), and warrants making Walker a Member of the Order of the British Empire and a Member of the Order of Canada.

This fonds consists of material from the practice of three generations of Newcastle (Northumberland County) lawyers, chiefly Allan A. Davidson, Jr. The legal documents reflect solicitor's work rather than civil litigation or criminal presentation. It includes material about expropriation by the Intercolonial Railway / Canadian National Railway and the forestry activities of Fraser Company. There are family documents, financial records and land records from 1795 to 1950. An account book belonging to Henry Gerrish, 1837-1840, is included as are the letterbooks of John Ambrose Street, Street & Kerr and Street & Davidson. There is also a journal of John Ambrose Street's voyage to England, 1817-1819.

Contains the Minutes of the Doaktown Red Cross from its establishment on October 8, 1939 until February 17, 1947 and monthly "Reports of Women's War Activities", December 1943 - June 1946 (7 reports). Included are regular summaries of the number and type of item being made or collected and sent to Saint John. Overall, indicative of a very strong war effort by a dedicated group in a small community.

This collection consists of records relating to the donor's father Herbert L. Logan, a militia officer and veteran of World War I and World War II, along with records the donor collected pertaining to his interests, notably World War I, World War II, the Moncton Hawks hockey team, the Loyal True Blue Association, John M. Brown's general store at Quaco, N.B., businesses of Albert, Westmorland, and Saint John counties, and the steamboats "St. George" and "John Ward".

Records pertaining to Herbert L. Logan and the First and Second World Wars include circulars, telegrams, and photographs relating to the New Brunswick Rangers; messages and orders from commanding officers relating to the 7th Field Hygiene Section of the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps; a postcard of the 7th Field Hygiene Section; identification cards, permits, tickets, shoulder patches, and military buttons; propaganda leaflets dropped by the R.C.A.F. over Germany in German (1930s); handbooks and booklets; the constitution of the Canadian Legion of the British Empire Service League [191-] and other material pertaining to the Canadian Legion; and newspaper clippings.

Records pertaining to the Moncton Hawks include photographs and postcards; a souvenir history of the Moncton Hawks, Allan Cup Champions, 1932-1934; a printed copy of "The Hawk Song" (1933); hockey programme (1948); a hockey schedule (1940s); and a small commemorative booklet containing photographs of the Moncton Hawks Maritime Champions, 1932-1933.

The collection also includes the constitution and 3 membership booklets relating to the Loyal True Blue Association that functioned at Youngs Cove, Queens County, in the 1920s and 1930s; a general store account book for John M. Brown's general store at Quaco, N.B., (1877-1880); accounts relating to the steamboat St. George and the steamer John Ward (1830s); the Intercolonial Railway Time Table of Trains conveying Their Royal Highnesses, the Duke and Duchess of Cornwall and York from Saint John to Halifax, 1901; an English Speaking Citizens Committee of Moncton "reply to French propaganda," issued in 1934 to counter two circulars reportedly broadcast in Moncton and area by the Assomption Society of Moncton; and commercial advertising leaflets, letterheads, bills of sale and accounts pertaining to businesses in Albert, Westmorland, and Saint John counties. Of particular interest is an announcement issued by T. H. Estabrooks, of Saint John, of the launch of the "Estabrooks' Red Rose Coffee", [1901?].

The letter, dated 20 January 1813, contains a list of supplies that men from the company were supposed to bring with them if assembled in a case of emergency. The list included clothing, a blanket and some sort of carrying case.

This fonds consists of two medical journals--one containing records kept during his medical practice (14 April 1884 - 29 May 1892), the other recording daily transactions (1 October 1887 - 1 April 1892), a scrapbook containing photographs, loose photographs, and glass negatives. It also contains a biography file containing photocopies of newspaper stories and photos of Dr. George Noyes, and a handmade scrapbook by his son Benjamin L. Noyes entitled "Historical & Scenic Volume, Grand Manan Island, Charlotte County, N.B."

E. Allison MacKay fonds

This fonds consists primarily of the professional business records of barrister, solicitor and civil servant, E. Allison MacKay of Fredericton, New Brunswick. It consists of business correspondence, legal documents, receipts, memoranda, and statements of account. Much of his legal work related to property transactions, the settling of estates (probate), debts, bankruptcy, immigration, and civil suits. A Presbyterian, he accepted several legal cases involving the Presbyterian Church of Canada, notably, Ferguson et al v. McLean et al, a dispute arising in the congregation of St. James Presbyterian Church at Newcastle, N.B. over union with the United Church of Canada.

The fonds also includes correspondence, circulars, minutes of meeting, and notes relating to MacKay's work as secretary of the executive committee of the Children's Aid Society, chaired by W. J. West, that facilitated the placement of evacuated British children in the homes of York and Sunbury County residents during World War Two.

Also included are a few pieces of personal correspondence, as well as documents, correspondence and other material pertaining to his work with, or membership, in the Independent Order of Foresters, the Knights of Pythias, and St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church.

Edgar R. Jamieson family fonds

This fonds consists primarily of records pertaining to Edgar R. Jamieson's World War II activities and the Jamieson family history. There are also letters addressed to Blanche Jamieson from Edgar Jamieson, sent while he was serving overseas with the Canadian Army.

Edgar R. Jamieson's World War II records include his Canadian Army Clothing and Equipment Statement, [1943]; Canadian Militia Soldier's Pay Books, 1939-1945; Canadian Army Soldier's Pay Books, 1940-1945; two C.S.M. Nominal Roll Books for A. Company, Carleton and York Regiment that record the names of soldiers, their service numbers, and notes concerning their service (killed, wounded, evacuated, missing etc.), 1940s; and a map of the West End of London, [1940s?].

Blanche Jamieson's records consist of 52 letters sent to her by her brother, Edgar, that shed light on his wartime activities. The letters were sent from Woodstock, Halifax, aboard ship, England, France, and Italy. Transcriptions of these letters are also included in the fonds.

Jamieson family genealogy records consist of a 2 pp. family tree and copies of printed family histories entitled, "Descendants of John Jamieson" (25 pp.); "Descendants of Unknown Hamilton" (9 pp.); and "Descendants of George Blaney" (25 pp.).

Lastly the fonds consists of a World War I "Souvenir from France" -- a stitched post card containing a note written to Lillian from Steven L. Sloan, France, 15 July 1918, and a transcription of a letter written by James H. Blaney to his mother, July 31, 1859.
