New Brunswick Highland Games and Scottish Festival Inc.

This fonds contains the records of the NB Highland Games and Scottish Festival since 2003 when it was separated from the NB Scottish Society. It consists of minutes, reports, promotional materials (phamplets, flyers, newspaper articles) for most of the Highland Games, 2003-2011. In some cases only some of these records are currently available.

Whelpley family

Fonds consists mainly of the business records of the Whelpley family, particularly James A. Whelpley. There are deeds and legal agreements relating to family and business properties, including agreements with the Keene Manufacturing Company about manufacturing Whelpley patented skates. There are patents and applications for patents in United States, Canada, Britain, Germany, France and Hungary.

The business correspondence deals mainly with orders for skates from Canada, United States and Scotland. There are financial records and accounts, including a mortgage and an insurance policy for the family business. There is also a group of records dealing with participation in exhibitions, including Canada's International Exhibition in 1890 in Saint John and the World's Columbian Exposition at Chicago, 1893.

The extent of archival material on each of the organizations varies from only a few sheets to many folders or boxes. Many records suffered the same fate as many of the Synagogue records, being burned in a fire in 1933.

The fonds includes mostly original photographs of various sizes and formats, including professional and amateur images. There are black and white copies and negatives for many pictures acquired before the mid 1990s; these were produced by the Heritage Branch, when funding for the duplication of photographs was readily available. These copies were used for displays in the Museum. More recently photographs have been digitally scanned and stored electronically – this is particularly the case for photographs which have been loaned to the museum for brief periods of time for exhibits or research.

John F. Moorhead

This collection consists of research notes and material about the Anglican church in New Brunswick collected by Moorhead. There are notes on histories of Anglican churches in New Brunswick, including a copy of the vestry minutes of Trinity Church, Saint John, 1790-1825. There are also press clippings and printed ephemera about church history including the120th anniversary of St. George's Church, Saint John, 1941 and memorial pamphlets from Trinity Church, Saint John. Published booklets on the histories of the diocese of Fredericton and the parish of Fredericton are also included. There is also an extract from a diary, listing dates of events in the Anglican Church in New Brunswick and notes on records kept in cathedrals in the province.

Robert Reid letter

The letter from Robert Reid to Adam Smith is a record of Robert Reid's experiences and recollections as he travelled overland from Baie des Chaleur to Halifax, Nova Scotia in mid-winter in the company of some aboriginal people.

Edmund Hillyer Duval family

This fonds consists of personal records of Edmund Hillyer Duval and his children, namely, Marianne Duval, Amelia Duval, and Eliza Lury Duval Burditt and Lury's husband, William F. Burditt. There are also a very few records pertaining to Edmund H. Duval's work as an educator and member of Germain Street Baptist Church.

Edmund Hillyer Duval's records include manuscript copies of letters to various individuals relating to teachers' training (1848-1849); his estate papers; and a certificate of license to preach issued to him from Germain Street Baptist Church. Of particular interest are the materials pertaining to the descendants of Black Loyalists living at Loch Lomond or Willow Grove, near Saint John. These include a draft letter pertaining to the expenditure of funds for "ameliorating the condition" of blacks at Loch Lomond [1868], a memorandum of agreement for the construction of a meeting house at Willow Grove (1878), a brief account of the church's history, and a manuscript copy of a paper read at the opening of Willow Grove Church by Edmund H. Duval (1878).

Lury and William F. Burditt's and Marianne Duval's records each consist of a few pieces of correspondence. Of special interest are Amelia Duval's two dairies containing "scribblings" about her activities and interests. The 1900-[before 1907] volume records information on women's groups in Saint John, particularly the King's Daughters Society that worked with working-class girls and women in the port city.

Lastly, the fonds includes genealogy material on the Duval family, such as biographical notes and newspaper clippings.

Walter M. Buck - Book of Poems

Item is a 78 page book of poetry featuring the works of Walter Mansfield Buck. Buck was born in Dublin, Ireland, in December of 1826. A civil engineer, Buck came to Canada in 1852 where he was appointed Chief Engineer of the New Brunswick & Canadian Railway. From that time on he held important positions on every railroad in New Brunswick, and at the time of his death in 1881 he was Provincial Engineer of New Brunswick. Buck lived in St. Andrews and a was a member of the All Saints Anglican Church. Buck revised the plans to convert the All Saints Church from a stone structure to a wooden one.
