In 1785, as part of the formation of the new province of New Brunswick, Charlotte County was established as one of the original counties. Seven original parishes were created and set off in 1786 but they did not include all the lands assigned to the County. In 1814 it extended north to the County line and took in Dumbarton. Its communities are Bethel, Bocabec, Bocabec Cove, Digdeguash, Dumbarton, Elmsville, Johnson Settlement, Kerrs Ridge and McMinn.
