This book was originally begun as an exercise book by "Master R. Mowat May 28th 1839" and contains arithmetic exercises. The book has been turned over and the back contains a running account of charges for painting and other work on various ships. The work is specified and the names of the captains and the ships are given.

Fonds consists of a letter to David Burpee from Enoch Barker, Sheffield, New Brunswick, 1846 and one to David Burpee from C.H. Barker, Saint John, New Brunswick, 1847. They are probably both written by Charles H. Barker, a former Sheffield schoolmate of David Burpee. "Enoch" may be a nickname.

Abigail Chipman Ryerson

The fonds consist of a typescript copy of the diary kept by Abigail Chipman Ryerson, wife of Captain John K. Ryerson, during a voyage by sailing ship from Saint John, New Brunswick, to Greenock, Scotland, and back. The voyage began on 27 August and the last entry in the diary was made on 19 December 1847 at Brier Island where the vessel was stayed by a snowstorm.

The diary includes descriptions of everyday life on a ship from a female point of view, including such activities as quilting, sewing, knitting, and cooking. She also mentions Partridge Island, noting the recent arrivals of Irish immigrants there. There is a description of an encounter 24 November 1847 with the abandoned and waterlogged remains of the "Cumbria of Gloucester", located at latitude 50, longitude 40.

Fonds consists of a book of sermons, which includes 12 sermons, 1836-1839; a journal, inscribed “Journal commencing May 1837, ending May 1840", which actually begins with his arrival in Falmouth, 19 April 1837; and a journal, inscribed "Journal, Halifax & Windsor, commencing 17 Oct. 1842 - May 1846", which actually ends July 1846.

This fonds consists of the correspondence of Hazen in his role as mayor. Although there are some personal papers in this fonds, the bulk appears to have been created while carrying out the duties of the mayor between 1837 and 1840.

The subjects discussed in the letters include the construction of a breakwater in Saint John harbour, the Carleton ferry and records of the granting of Navy Island to the city in 1823. There are reports from the city inspectors about maintenance of roads and cleaning of the streets and records of licences to sell liquor. Information about the fire of 1839 and the Market House is included. There are also records of the Saint John Society library, the Madras school, and the Pest House. Some of the letters include references to Irish immigration.

This fonds consists of six state letters between Right Honorable Lord Stanley, Colonial Secretary, and Lieutenant Governor Sir William Colebrook, 1843 - 1845. Some of these letters are regarding the Imperial Acts for the protection of copyright in books and provincial post office establishment for the province of New Brunswick. There is also one letter, dated 1 October 1845, that includes an extract of a report from the Earl of Lonsdale to the Lords Commissioners of Her Majesty's Treasury dated 14 August 1845.
