Carleton-York Regiment

The fonds mainly consists of the Carleton Light Infantry's records after its reorganization in 1920. Fonds includes a history of the Carleton Light Infantry, records of the 1934 annual meeting of the Carleton Light Infantry, financial information, company correspondence, and nominal rolls. There are personnel files listing name, rank, company, address, registration date, and remarks concerning any leaves of absence, applications for higher rank, meetings attended, etc.; there are also medical officers' certificates, and property information. The information about the Carleton-York Regiment is limited to records of a 1937 meeting of the Regiment, a financial statement, and shared personnel files.

These records were collected by members of the Hart family while researching their family history. They include family letters, telegrams, research notes, pedigree charts, newspaper clippings, and outlines of biographical sketches of Joseph William Hart, Minnie Blanche Hart, Dorothy Hart, Charlotte Robertson Hart, James Gilbert Hart, and William Edward Hart.

Canadian Expeditionary Force No. 4 Siege Battery

The fonds consists of records of C.E.F. No. 4 Siege Battery. A nominal roll includes regimental numbers, name of corps, name and address of next of kin, country of birth, and place and date taken on strength. Information also includes place, date and name of ship of embarkation. There is also a roll of their first muster at Clarence Barracks, Portsmouth, which includes names, hospitals and nature of illness of those not present at muster.

There is typed history of the 4th Siege Battery describing voyage from Halifax, training in England, and battles fought in France. Also included are names and locations of other units travelling with the unit from Canada. There is considerable description of combat and troop movement. A list of troop movements provides dates, places in France and Belgium, with army units at each location.

There is also a casualties book which lists names of soldiers killed in action, died of wounds, wounded, suffering from other illnesses, transferred and 4 soldiers who returned home. The locations where the soldiers were killed in action are included.

There are some records about the administration of the canteen fund and Battery Association Fund and the photocopied obituary of William Smith (1976), a member of Battery.

There is also a nominal roll of the 131st Siege Battery which includes regimental numbers, ranks and names. Some names are marked with crosses to denote death.

This fonds consists of the nominal roll of B Company, in a leather-bound volume dated 1916. Information about enlisted men includes: names, addresses and place of birth; next of kin, their address and the relationship of kin; date of birth and enlistment as well as religion, nationality and pay rate. There are also 4 loose typed pages of the nominal roll which include regiment numbers, rank and platoon numbers. The first page provides the names of the non-commissioned officers.

This fonds documents the business activities of Robert B. Adams -- undertaker, mortician, and funeral director. It consists of account ledgers which record the name of the deceased, his or her date of birth, the cause and place of death, the place of burial, and the name of the individual requesting services (1903-1908).

Also included are records of casket sales (1896-1902), death returns of the Fredericton Board of Health (1899-1904) containing detailed information about the deceased, three burial permits (1905), a floor plan for the funeral parlor, and a few additional business records.

This collection consists of two letters from Col. P.L. Browne, Director of the Division of Voluntary War Relief in the Department of National Health and Welfare. One of the letters encloses a letter from Sir Ellsworth Flavelle outlining the purposes of the United Emergency Fund and appealing for assistance from various organizations across Canada.

The latter plans were drawn for the Rev. G. C. Gallaway.

Dunham and McDougall family

This collection documents the business and personal activities of members of the Dunham and McDougall families, particularly David E. Dunham. It includes Samuel Dunham's book of timber surveys (1846-1849) in the parish of Hampstead and shoemaker Jonathan McDougall's cash book (1850-1853) and ledger (1851-1859) reflecting the trade conducted in his shops at Port Hope and Wickham.

There are also architect David E. Dunham's account books, order books, and cash accounts (1872-1883); an office diary kept by one of his draftsmen, possibly Arthur Anderson; advertisements for Dunham's firm, giving qualifications and a partial list of buildings designed by him; several architectural plans for and photographs of his buildings; and accounts for private buildings.

Lastly, the fonds contains 7 school exercise or copybooks (1844-1861) belonging to David Elson Dunham, Mary Ann McDougall, James Norman McDougall, or Jessie McDougall; a story by Mary Ann McDougall (1860); family photographs of the Dunhams and McDougalls; family history notes compiled by Mrs. J. S. Vanderploeg; and a typed transcript of a letter from schoolmaster John C. Thompson of Stanley to Jonathan McDougall of Gagetown (1838).
