The contents include: correspondence ; invoices in alphabetical order, with catalogues and advertising and ledgers from suppliers ; day books and journals in chronological order ; Telegrams in alphabetical order by local resident name 1916-1929 ; Registered letter ledger for Seal Cove Post Office 1911-1914 ; Journal for recording telephone calls 1953-1954 ; and original fish can labels two different types. This fonds consists of Clarence Newton's cash book, 1897-1898, listing all assets of the company and their location and value. Also included are the Newton Bros. Ltd. account books, 1950-1954 listing account details and payouts for expenses and salaries incurred in operating a store. The purchase journal lists the names of suppliers, the cost of stock and shipping, and expenses related to stock.
Calvin A. Scovil opened the Rose Cottage in North Head in 1896.
"The management of Rose Cottage has been changed as Mrs. Calvin Scovil who has operated it for many years has retired. Mr. & Mrs. Romaine Morse, owners of the Shore Crest Lodge at North Head where patrons get their money’s worth in ample and delicious meals will conduct Rose Cottage Inn as a tourist proposition during the summer months only. This fonds contains one scrapbook and an envelope of newspaper clippings all pertaining to fisheries issues on Grand Manan or in the Atlantic Provinces. There are two posters advertising for the government wanting to purchase fish and fish products.
This ledger contains columns listing bills and credits to businesses that were supplying stock to a a grocery store from 1947 - 1955. In 1948, on page 192, there are entries for the purchase of dulse, an edible seaweed, from local workers called pickers who picked the dulse off the beach rocks at low tides and then dried it and sold it. Pages 207-408 are unused. The last page before the back cover has a few memorable quotations recorded.
