Macdonald Consolidated School

Attesting to the activities of MacDonald Consolidated School. The acquisitions within contain official documents and anecdotal remembrances of the school activities.
This fonds consists of 1978 land surveys, official building plan renovations and records of school activities since 1904. It also contains printed and photographed records of the school alumni society activity and details of school reunions. Letters, notices, newspaper articles, and student lists are included.

Raymond Clare Archibald

Fonds consists of records generated by Archibald in his activities as scholar, researcher, collector, historian of Mount Allison and by personal relationships with friends, family and fellow Allisonians. A large portion of the fonds relates to the Mount Allison Ladies' College.

Files contain: correspondence with classmates, Class of 1894, of which he was life president, and with academic colleagues; and records related to centenary of the Ladies' College. Scrapbooks contain correspondence, clippings, notices, posters, programs, memorabilia which document activities, students, faculty, buildings at Mount Allison, 1857-1935. Correspondence, guides, and scrapbook document the building of the MMAML collection.

Mary Mellish files contain letters to Mrs. Archibald from colleagues, testimonials, letters of recommendation, letters to her son and brother; speeches and poetry written by her, letters of sympathy to her son following her death.

Photographs consist of images of family members, friends, Mount Allison buildings.

Publications are mainly authored by R.C. Archibald, off-prints and monographs; bibliography available.

This collection contains documents belonging to Reverend Charles M. Smith of Rollingdam, New Brunswick, including both documents related to his research projects into local history as well as his duties as a Reverend. Documents related to these duties include marriage records for marriages performed by Charles Smith, and his notes and drafts for eulogies that were done at funeral services. Documents related to Charles Smith’s research projects include hand drawn and printed maps and drawings, published material and primary documents used by Charles Smith to support his research, and notes on church history, roadwork and early travel, local history, Charlotte County schools, and genealogical data. Also included are St. Croix Courier articles and essays written by Charles Smith, as well as the drafts for those items, and his correspondences, which include letters containing information related to his research and more personal letters.

Jackie Gibson Collection

This collection contains correspondences, documents, photos, and other types of material related to Joseph and Effie Gibson and their descendants. Most of the correspondence in this collection concerns Joe Gibson, a Royal Canadian Air Force pilot and oldest son of Joseph and Effie Gibson. Many photos of him and his crewmates, his letters home from overseas, as well as his schoolwork and notes from leaning how to fly an aircraft are also included in this collection. Several items which concern the affairs of John Gibson, Joe Gibson’s younger brother, can be found in this collection. These include correspondences and legal documents related to the estate of Charlotte Gibson, his sister, as well as an agreement between John Gibson and the Canada Railroad Company concerning interest and his land. Most of the personal items and published material in this collection belonged to John Gibson as well, these include publications related to his position as a volunteer firefighter, reports of organizations he belonged to, maps of the Town of St. Andrews, notes related to his work as a stonemason, and other items.

Files contain travel documents; account books concerning prices in Russia, 1932; draft lecture notes on the history of Canada; public lecture notices and programs for Smith's presentations; scrapbook of press notices and clippings concerning her public lectures; postcards collected in travels and used to illustrate lectures; certificates; diplomas; letters of recommendation; photographs of Oxford University "first women's degree day" 14 October 1920, Women's Council parade, Sackville, New Brunswick, Mount Allison campus scenes; painting "Tantramar Marshes" by Stanley Royle; letter from Elizabeth Brewster, 1969; letters from Smith to family (mainly Helen Smith Skinner) and friends concerning Northern Spain during the time of the Spanish Civil War [1936?].

Dr. Alfred Goldsworthy Bailey

This fonds consists in large part of the official records of the various offices Dr. Bailey held during his career at the University of New Brunswick from 1938-1970. There is a large amount of material relating to his extensive literary contributions, including articles; manuscripts, published and unpublished books; and records from his editorial role in "The Literary History of Canada". There are also some personal papers and a small number of family papers.
The fonds is divided into 15 series:

  • Series 1 - University Committees, including the Creative Arts Committee and the Arts Faculty Committee, 1956-1958;
  • Series 2 - Arts Faculty, 1932-1966, including records of the Arts Faculty's activities;
  • Series 3 - Literary Works, 1806 - 1990; predominant 1923-1979, including published and unpublished writings, notes and records about and by his family. The series also includes photographs and correspondence with literary colleagues including Malcolm Ross, Roy Daniells, Elizabeth Brewster, Michael Gnarowski, Carl F. Klink and Jack McClelland. There is also some correspondence between Bailey and Lord Beaverbrook and between Loring Ewart Bailey and W. Ganong and George Parkin;
  • Series 4 - Miscellaneous 1946-1979; predominant 1968-1979; including bibliographies, records of Founders' Day (UNB), the Loyalists, and the Canadian Writers' Federation;
  • Series 5 - Graduate Students, 1943-1959, consisting largely of correspondence with graduate students in the History Department;
  • Series 6 - Library ,-1959 ; predominant 1948-1958, including correspondence and other records about the operations of the Library.
