Harris Hatch Papers

Papers consists of the day-to-day activities Harris Hatch was experiencing through correspondence and receipts. Majority of the papers from the correspondence series comes from business related letters to and from clients from various areas in and around Charlotte County. While the Receipted Bills series consists primarily of personal expenses for his home (now the Ross Memorial Museum (188 Montague St., St. Andrews, NB)) and family members.

A pamphlet printed by the St. Andrews Civic Trust Inc. which contains a brief history of how Empire Loyalists from America settled St. Andrews. Has a particular focus on the architectural styles of their homes, and contains images of historic buildings in St. Andrews which reflect these styles.

This fonds consists of the personal papers of the Spinney family, as well deeds and court documents, and flyers, programs, newspapers, scrapbooks, and other gathered by the family (primarily Llewellyn Spinney) relating to local and world events connected to St George and Charlotte County as a whole. The documents particularly relate to the First and Second World Wars, the Eastern Pulp Wood Co., Ford automobiles, businesses of St George, the Utopia Centre, Black's Harbour high school, James Mollison and the American Flyers, church events, the Royal Family, and rum running.

The Caughey/Coughey family collection consists of the working and personal papers of the Caugheys. Earl had a legal career in New Brunswick spanning 51 years, as a solicitor, at the Bar as Barrister or on the Bench as a Provincial Court Judge, County Court Judge and Judge of the Court of Queen’s Bench in Charlotte County and New Brunswick. He played a very important role in the foundation of many organizations and associations in St Andrews and New Brunswick, including the St. Andrews Kiwanis Club, the New Brunswick Golf Association, the St. Andrews Golf Club, the St. Andrews Yacht Club, the Sunbury Shores Arts and Nature Centre, the St. Andrews Arts Council, the Charlotte County Board of Trade, and the Charlotte County Branch of the New Brunswick Chapter of the Irish Canadian Cultural Association.. He was a local historian, with a keen interest in passenger lists of immigrant ships, shipping in general and genealogy. Estella (Day) Caughey, was very active with the Canadian Girl Guides, she took the lead in establishing a Brownies Pack in St Andrews 1939, she soon became District Commissioner. Later she became Division Commissioner and eventually an International Commissioner. She was instrumental in Girl Guide summer camps in Charlotte County, not just for local Guides but ‘All America Guide Camp’ and an International Camp. She was named a Life Member of the Girl Guides in 1957 and was awarded the Order of the Beaver in 1959. Her other great interest was the St Andrews Town Library, where she volunteered for 15 years. She was named Citizen of the Year in St Andrews

The fonds consists of two separate branches, Passamaqoddy and St. Croix. The former containing mostly Ladies Auxiliary with accounting history, memberships, and costs, and surrender of their charters and rights in 2018. The latter consists of meeting minutes of all sub-branches and memberships. Some reference to the Great War Veterans Association, a predecessor to the Royal Canadian Legion with a partial history of the branch since it’s founding. Further sub-branches covered by or in relation to the St. Croix branch is included, such as Beavers, Scouts, Ladies, Sr., and Jr. Auxiliary.

Nehemiah Marks fonds

This collection consists of correspondence, financial records, military records, and legal documents relating to the personal and official activities of Captain Nehemiah Marks, and his son Lieutenant Colonel Nehemiah Marks. Included records of early surveys and explorations of the lands near St. Stephen along the western branch of the St. Croix (Scoodiac) river; military records of the 4th Battalion Charlotte County Militia and the 97th Infantry Regiment; deeds and quitclaims for property in the town of St. Stephen (Morriston); and articles and books relating to the Loyalist settlement of St. Stephen, a history of Trinity Church, and Thomas Baillie.

Addition of deeds and maps from Charlotte and York County pertaining to Nehemiah Marks granting, plotting, and surveying land. These also include plans for future railroad ideas and plans for St. Stephen and surrounding areas, with some maps going further up New Brunswick and one heavily damaged map of Maine in 1837.
