Michael Nowlan

This fonds documents the writing career of Michael O. Nowlan, as well as much of his work as a teacher of English and advocate of Canadian literature. The fonds consists largely of correspondence to and from Nowlan, and drafts and notes for articles and books. Also included are committee minutes, newspaper clippings, and a few photographs. Despite the existence of separate "Correspondence" files, almost every file in the fonds contains correspondence, usually associated with the material in the file.

It also includes correspondence with other writers, namely: Margaret Avison, Luella Booth, George Bowering, Geoff Bowman, Victor Coleman, Mike Doyle, Louis Dudek, Steven Forth, Gary Geddes, Harry Howith, Irving Layton, Daphne Marlatt, John Newlove, Alden Nowlan, Steven Osterlund, W.W.E. Ross, and Mike Strong (Mirko Srzentich). Printed works Jaw Breaker, June '71, No. 1 and History's Wife: A Sculpture are also included.

This fonds contains mostly correspondence, articles, newspaper clippings, and exhibition catalogues relating to Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Canadian artist and long-time friend of Madge Smith. This fonds also contains 70 photographs taken by Smith during the late 1930s. Subjects of these photographs include places, such as the Fredericton Golf Course and the Oromocto Flats; winter scenes; and animals, such as horses and cats.

The Collected Poems of Sir Charles G.D. Roberts

This fonds documents the activities of Desmond Pacey and his colleagues which resulted in the production of a scholarly volume of collected poems by Charles G.D. Roberts. It contains photocopies of typescript, holograph or published versions of 382 poems by Roberts, many having first appeared in newspapers, magazines, anthologies or in one of his books of verse. The fonds also includes index cards which contain the title and publishing history of each work, research notes and literary comments. Typescript manuscripts, project correspondence, research files and an overview of the poetry project are included.

This fonds documents the life of Dorothy Roberts, particularly with respect to her relationships with family members, most notably with her father, Theodore Goodridge (Thede), and her brother, William Goodridge (Goody). It also reflects her work as a writer of prose and verse.

This fonds also documents the literary efforts of Arthur R. Leisner with respect to the production of a manuscript of literary criticism on the work of Charles G. D. Roberts.

This fonds consists of 2 series: 1. Dorothy Roberts and 2. Arthur R. Leisner.

It contains business and personal correspondence, 3 typescript copies of Arthur's study, a review of Dorothy's work and several miscellaneous items. A few 19th century letters between members of the Roberts family living in New Brunswick and typescript copies of poems by Theodore Goodridge Roberts (Thede) and William Goodridge Roberts are also included.

This fonds consists of photocopies of 22 letters written by Alden Nowlan to Nicholas Catanoy and his wife, Marie-Claude. While the letters are primarily of a personal nature, they include on-going discussions concerning the production of Modern Romanian poetry.

This is a photocopy of a bound volume of Bert William's "Beginners Please My Life in Amateur Theatre". The work discusses his early life, including growing up in a working-class neighbourhood of Bolton, Lancashire, England; attending school; and working at various occupations while a young boy -- in a factory, in a cotton mill, and for several cinemas. He also comments on his early years in amateur theatre, the Workers' Educational Society, the First World War (Great War), the Second World War, and his work in adult theatre, both in England and in Canada, as a director, actor, and stage hand . The volume also includes photocopies of newspaper clippings, correspondence, and theatre programmes.

It also includes financial records, genealogical and biographical information, speeches, and notes. It includes photocopies of correspondence with literary figures, including Elizabeth Brewster, Irving Layton, Dorothy Livesay, and Miriam Waddington and between Lorne Pierce and Frederick Philip Grove.
