George J. Dibblee

The Dibblee fonds deals extensively with litigation related to the lumbering industry, providing information on relationships among lumberers, suppliers, and sheriffs. Included are documents for about 2450 civil cases. There is relatively little non-litigated work (about 120 matters, mostly deeds for land), and very little criminal material.

In addition to professional and family correspondence, the fonds includes voluminous documentation arising out of construction of Dibblee's stone house in Fredericton in late 1820s. Also included are records of Dibblee's role as an executor in defending the estate of Receiver General George Pidgeon Bliss against claims of province. There are documents relating to local government in Westmorland County assembled by Edward B. Chandler and papers of Hampton (Kings County) lawyer George Otty mainly about debt collection. There is also some material concerning only law partner, George Frederick Street Berton (1808-1840), editor of "Berton's Reports of Supreme Court of New Brunswick."

This collection consists of the correspondence relating to railway history involving requests for information on specific trains to/from George Brown. Some correspondence is printed with company letterhead. A few pieces of correspondence have documents attached which relate to railway history. There is a letter referring to a trip around the world by Nellie Bly, a New York City newspaper reporter with the remark that some portions of her trip were done by train.

The fonds includes documents relating to approximately 300 civil cases, as well as extensive files on non-litigated land transactions, debt collections, and estate administration. Included is particularly interesting material on the legal aspects of constructing the railway through Kings County. While there are no criminal law files, there is considerable documentation arising from the role as clerk of the peace. Although the geographical focus is Kennebecasis Valley, other counties included are Albert, Queens and St. John.

This fonds consists mainly of the correspondence, legal and land documents accumulated by George S. Grimmer in his public offices in Charlotte County. There are a wide range of subjects including taxes and fees, legal cases and land purchases. The records deal with schools and teachers salaries, the administration of the courts, election arrangements and voters lists, the licensing of commercial activities and the appointment of local government officials such as fish wardens and liquor dealers. There are frequent mentions of ships and ship building, especially the schooner "Mary Ellen" and of roads and bridges. There is also a reference to the defenses against the Fenians in 1865.

There are also some household receipts and other records. The papers of F. Howard Grimmer, 1858-1903, are also included.

This fonds consists largely of the records kept during the time that Baird was a senator, including correspondence about patronage and other political matters. Subjects include Victoria Telephone company, railways, bridges, ferries, and roads, and land transactions. There is correspondence about Indian Reservation and lumbering, including contracts and crown timber licenses.

The fonds also includes material related to the John J. Kupkey estate and the Beveridge, Cameron estates. There are minutes of Liberal-Conservative Association, 1895, the Perth Sabbath School Register, 1877, and accounts of the Baird General Store at Perth, 1877, 1881, 1885 and for Victoria Co. Telephone Co., 1903.

This fonds contains the account books for George V. Beatteay's contract work. Some of the projects he worked on were: Quarantine Station on Partridge Island (ca. 1898-1900); Indiantown school; Immigrant building; M.R.A. warehouse; Wiggins Male Orphan Asylum; numerous personal dwellings; and the following vessels: Royal Oak, Skewsbury, Aclede, D.W. Clark, Annie F. McLeod, Jennie Clark, Iris, Olive, Lizzie, Crocus, Irish McLauglan, Ida E., Buckle, Rothesay Parole, Archille and Arnon.

Gilbert family genealogy

The fonds consists of genealogical research material about the Gilbert and allied families history from the mid-16th century onwards. It includes George Gilbert's correspondence with family members about the family history and a manuscript copy of "The Gilberts of New England," which was edited by Geoffrey Gilbert of Victoria, British Columbia and published in 1959.

There are also Gilbert family estate papers, 1826 -1924, dealing with the estates of Elizabeth Gilbert Wilson, Bradford Gilbert and Henry Gilbert.

Hanington family

The fonds consists of records belonging to several generations of the Hanington family. There is a letter, 1818, from William Hanington in Shediac to his son, John, in Halifax about the purchase of merchandise for his business. Two modern copies of this letter are also included. There are school certificates for good character and deportment belonging to Jane Chase from the New York Ward School, 1851 and 1853, and Mrs. Hunts Seminary for Young Ladies, 1858.

There are also travel documents belonging to Mabel Hanington for a journey through Siberia and Russia en route to Switzerland. There is also a published English language reader and a pamphlet in Chinese.

Hannah Flood lot certificate

The fonds consists of a lot certificate given to Hannah Flood in 1837. It is for lot 35 in the southeast range in Willow Grove, Loch Lomond. The certificate was given by the body responsible for administration of Crown grants to the Black refugees. It is unclear whether Hannah Flood had actually purchased the land.
