This collection contains documents belonging to Reverend Charles M. Smith of Rollingdam, New Brunswick, including both documents related to his research projects into local history as well as his duties as a Reverend. Documents related to these duties include marriage records for marriages performed by Charles Smith, and his notes and drafts for eulogies that were done at funeral services. Documents related to Charles Smith’s research projects include hand drawn and printed maps and drawings, published material and primary documents used by Charles Smith to support his research, and notes on church history, roadwork and early travel, local history, Charlotte County schools, and genealogical data. Also included are St. Croix Courier articles and essays written by Charles Smith, as well as the drafts for those items, and his correspondences, which include letters containing information related to his research and more personal letters.

Maps and Drawings

This series contains hand drawn maps of local Charlotte County Communities created by Reverend Charles M. Smith as part of his research projects into local history, which show the relative locations and names of families in areas such as Sorrel Ridge or Pleasant Ridge from about 1812-1968. There are also printed maps of areas in or around Charlotte County which have Charles Smith’s notes written on them. This series also contains some sketches, including a sketch of a building by an unknown artist, prints of Lieutenant Clark’s New Brunswick Sketches, and a map of Baptist churches in western Canada from 1965

Correspondences

This series contains correspondences addressed to or written by Reverend Charles M. Smith from 1952 to 1990. The topics of these correspondences include comments on Charles Smith’s published research results, genealogical inquiries and information, research materials, thank yous, and personal correspondences. There is also a letter from the Registrar General of Vital Statistics for 1952 J. A. Melonson registering Charles Smith under the Marriage Act, a letter from the Oak Bay Rural Cemetery Company asking for financial contributions, and sample forms for registering schools with the Canadian Inventory of Historic Buildings.

Marriage Records

This series contains Official Notices of Marriage for marriages performed by Reverend Charles M. Smith for the years 1960 to 1969 at Wilson’s Beach, Rollingdam, St. Andrews, Fredericton, Moores Mills, and Milltown. It also contains Charles Smith’s Registration Certificate under the Marriage Act, dated December 1959, as well a book titled “Pastor’s Record of Weddings” which contains notes on weddings performed by Charles Smith for the years 1948 to 1963.

Funeral Services

This series contains notes and drafts for eulogies and ceremonies performed by Reverend Charles M. Smith at funeral services from 1959 to 1982. This series also contains a book titled “Pastor’s Record of Funerals” which contains notes on funeral services performed by Charles Smith from 1948 to 1979. There is also a pamphlet for the memorial service of Reverend Laurie A. Wood, which Charles Smith participated in.

Published Material

This series contains published material that was used by Reverend Charles M. Smith as part of his research into local Charlotte County history. It contains many articles published in the St. Croix Courier and other newspapers, as well as an album that contains newspaper clippings on births, deaths, marriages, and church news. Topics of these articles include obituaries, local history, church history, photographs, and a collection of old advertisements. This series also contains some essays, including “History of the Rollingdam United Church of Canada” by Mrs. Douglas Dowe, “Atlantic Baptist Roots” by Philip G. A. Allwood, extracts from a thesis by F. Archibald titled “Contributions of the Scottish Church to Early New Brunswick Presbyterianism”, and a portion of William F. Ganong’s “Origins of the Settlement in New Brunswick. Also included are memoirs told by Robert LeRay Wilson titled “As I Remember” and a book titled “The Carson Mansion: America’s Finest Victorian Home and the Man who Built It” by Laurence Beal.

Published Material by Charles M. Smith

This subseries contains published material that was written by Reverend Charles M. Smith as a result of his research into local Charlotte County history. It contains many St. Croix Courier articles on topics such as local history, church history, etymology, Charlotte County Schools, and Biblical History. Also included are essays by Charles Smith on Charlotte County Schools and the Ninth Maine Regiment of Volunteers.

Drafts

This series contains drafts for essays and other published material written by Reverend Charles M. Smith as part of his research into local Charlotte County history. Topics of these drafts include local history, Charlotte County schools, church history, Block-Houses, travel in 1783-1813, the layout of old roads and their maintenance, and family history. Titles for the more complete drafts in this series include “Brief History of Education in New Brunswick”, “Piskahegan: It’s War Settlement”, “A Physiographic Study of the Piskahegan River”, “St. Croix Area and the Out-Break of the War of 1812”, “Rollingdam, Data on its Name and Origins”, and “Piskahegan and Josiah True”.

Research Notes

This series contains Reverend Charles M. Smith’s research notes on various aspects of Charlotte County History, as well as primary sources that were used to support this research. Topics of these research notes include genealogy, church history, early roadwork and travel, local history, and the schools of Charlotte County.

Primary Sources

This subseries contains primary documents that were used as part of Reverend Charles M. Smith’s Research into local Charlotte County history. It includes a school register containing notes on the annual meetings for the Dumbarton and St. David schools for 1880 as well as tax information and invoices for these schools from 1882 to 1883, and other financial information from 1885 to 1886. This subseries also includes inspector’s reports for school district no. 7 for 1906, and the 1906 trustee’s reports for schools in the Charlotte County region. There are also some printed copies of original letters, which include accounts of payments for labor performed on the road between St. Andrews and Fredericton for 1816 to 1820, a list of Penobscot Loyalists who settled in the district of Passamaquoddy in 1789, and military correspondence related to the St. Andrews Block House from 1814.
