Administrative history
Gerrish House Society was formed in 1961 by a group of interested residents of Grand Manan Island, New Brunswick, under the guidance of L. Keith Ingersoll. On 18 June 1974, its name was changed to Grand Manan Museum Inc. Its purpose was to construct a museum for Grand Manan in fulfillment of a desire to preserve local history. There was also a need for a permanent structure to house the Allan Moses Bird Collection (consisting of 300 stuffed birds), which had been given to the children of Grand Manan in 1951. The first structure was a Centennial Project for 1968. Two more major expansions - one in 1979 and one in 1997 - give us the building we have today.
Grand Manan Museum Inc. continues to work closely with the Grand Manan Historical Society. That Society was formed in 1934 by summer resident Buchanan Charles of Massachusetts and interested individuals from Grand Manan and the mainland. This society made the collection of information about Island history its primary aim, while the Museum's mandate is to preserve the artifactual history of the Island.
Custodial history
Gerrish House Society and Grand Manan Museum records were housed at the museum until 1986. At that time the Grand Manan Archives was established and the documents were then housed in the Grand Manan Archives at the Grand Manan Museum.
Scope and content
This fonds consists of records created in opening and operating the Grand Manan Museum. Included are construction files, opening and maintenance files, minutes of meetings, annual reports, architectural plans, and correspondence about displays and loans for early exhibits.
Physical condition
Immediate source of acquisition
The Gerrish House Society and the Grand Manan Museum created these records over 50 years in operation. The records to 1986 were sorted and accessioned to the Grand Manan Archives for storage in 1986. Re-organized and updated in 2023 to the year 2020 after renovations in the Curator's office. Records entered into Provincial database in March 2023.
Arrangement
Artificial arrangement by archivist. Three series were created to document the life of the museum through 1961 to 2020 and three major expansion projects.
