Biographical history

In 1827, G. Graydon was a captain in the Royal Engineers and was probably stationed in Fredericton, York County, New Brunswick. He drafted a proposed plan and specification for buildings for a subaltern detachment to be constructed of stone at Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick. By the 1830s he had returned to England where he was still working as an engineer and had risen to the rank of lieutenant-colonel.

Information about the custody of this record prior to acquisition is incomplete. These records were obtain by Louise Manny, of Newcastle, prior to 1970.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of records pertaining to the proposed construction of stone buildings at Miramichi, Northumberland County, New Brunswick. Included are the specifications for a guard house, cook house, privies, and well [1827]; a letter addressed to Captain Douglas, Fredericton, from G. Graydon, Captain Royal Engineers, dated at Fredericton, 11 July 1827, enclosing these plans for a subaltern detachment at Miramichi; an estimate for the barracks at Miramichi; and a hand-drawn architectural plan of the proposed subaltern barracks by G. Graydon, dated 1827.
