Biographical history

Dr. John Francis Macaulay (1876-1939) was born in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia. He studied medicine at McGill University and graduated in 1898. He returned to Saint John, NB. to take a position as a house doctor at the Saint John Public Hospital. In July 1904, Dr. Macaulay came to Grand Manan and took up the position of Doctor for the Island. In 1906, he married Marion Smith, R.N., of Saint John, N.B. They built their home in Castalia, Grand Manan, N.B. They had two sons, Beverly and Hubert. The Macaulays were very much a part of the community and were involved in the church, lodge and many sporting events. John served as the Island Doctor until the time of his death, Sept. 17, 1939. His office was in Castalia. Reference from the Grand Manan Historian, No. XXV, M.D. for the Islands.
