History
Founded in 1932, the Co-operative Commonwealth Federation (CCF) was a political coalition of progressive, socialist, and labour forces which desired to create a political party to bring about economic reforms to alleviate the worst effects of the Great Depression. At a CCF meeting held in Regina in 1933, J.S. Woodsworth was elected the party's first president. The CCF outlined its primary goals in the "Regina Manifesto" which included the nationalization of key industries and the creation of a welfare state which would include universal pensions, health and welfare insurance, children's allowances, unemployment insurance, and workers' compensation.
In the 1930s, the CCF elected members to Parliament and to several provincial legislatures. By the 1940s, the party had split into two factions: one which supported Woodsworth's pacifist stance on the Second World War, and the other which favoured Canada's participation in the conflict. The CCF party was active in NB in the 1940s, a provincial council being held in Saint John in November 1948.
In the post-war period, the party lost popular support, partly because it was accused of communist leanings. In 1961 the CCF and the Canadian Labour Congress formed an alliance which resulted in the birth of the New Democratic Party.
