Biographical history

Bucanan Charles(1898 - 1977) first visited Grand Manan in 1924 and there immediately began an association of mutual benefit that was to last for over half a century. As he came to know and respect the people of the insular community, and their way of life, the history of the area began to hold a growing interest. Older citizens like Joseph Gaskill, last of the shipbuilders, and others having intimate links with the past, along with local historians, became special friends. Under his leadership, Grand Manan Historical Society was organized in 1930 and incorporated a year later. Then, in 1934, as one observance of the 150th anniversary of the first settlement(of Grand Manan), he brought out the first issue of the Grand Manan Historian. The objective for the new magazine was, along with featuring original works, the republishing of the array of reports and essays that had appeared over a period of two centuries, quite sufficient material on which to draw for many years to come. Bucanan Charles set about to create a unique publication that soon attracted wide attention for its design, content and general excellence. After six issues of the Historian, and production of the first detailed map of the Island, in 1941 with the world at war, and his recent marriage to Mary Stevens of North Andover, he found it necessary to conclude the work related to Grand Manan. Bucanan Charles died on March 2, 1977 at age 79.

Custodial history

Bucanan Charles, of North Andover, Massachusetts, in 1931 founded the Grand Manan Historical Society and was editor of its early editions of the annual Grand Manan Historian. For the Society, he collected a great deal of primary material which was taken to the United States, hopefully as a basis for additional research and writing. War time conditions by 1940 and other factors caused the program to be discontinued.

In 1962 the Historical Society the Historical Society was reestablished and the Historian series continued after a lapse of two decades. A separate corporation, named after Moses Gerrish, a leader in the Loyalist settlement of 1784, was organized and through its efforts a Centennial Museum was opened in 1967. Assured of a safe and permanent repository, the early archival data was then deposited in that institution in December 1970.

According to Mrs. Audrey A. Ingalls, (past) president of the Museum's board of directors, the Buchanan Charles Collection added to the material already in the small archive makes up one of the most complete resources of local history to be found anywhere. Similar expressions came from Leon G. Small, head of the Historical Society (in 1970), who also stated that the return of the Island papers had been under consideration for some time and that it was of great satisfaction to him and of importance to the Province generally.

The small trailer load was brought from North Andover to Grand Manan by Eric Allaby, who was the Museum curator. Preliminary processing of the collection was carried out by Mr. Allaby, with assistance from Mrs. Lester (Norma) Neves, (then) the Museum Registrar, and L. K. Ingersoll, (then) curator of the Department of Canadian History at the New Brunswick Museum.
Note: The above statement came from a press release from the New Brunswick Museum, December 17, 1970.

The collection was housed in the basement of the Grand Manan Museum. It travelled to the Provincial Archives in Fredericton, N.B. for microfilming in the 1970's. The papers were transferred to the Grand Manan Archives when it was organized in 1986. In 1997, the Museum expanded and the archives moved into its environmentally controlled vault. In 2008, the collection was refreshed into new acid free folders and an expanded file list was created. There was great excitement as the files were opened and reviewed and it was discovered just what a treasure they contained.

Scope and content

This fonds consists of many handwritten letters from the 1930's discussing events in the 1800's and early 1900's. Much of this research was used to create the Grand Manan Historians that Buchanan Charles wrote and edited - preserving much of Grand Manan Island's early history. He collected an extensive library from which 53 books and close to 300 brochures, pamphlets, and reports were donated with this collection of 170 cm of textual records. The published records are housed in the research library at the Grand Manan Museum.
