History

The Atlantic Salmon Museum is the brainchild of the Central Miramichi Historical Society whose members, through their research and discussions with local residents, very quickly came to recognize the impact that the Atlantic salmon had – and continues to have – on the communities up and down the Miramichi River. The desire to commemorate that influence – both on the history and on the economy of this area – and to ensure that future generations are taught to respect and preserve this vital species was realized when construction of the Salmon Museum began on May 8, 1982.

For over 30 years now, the Atlantic Salmon Museum has told the story not only of the Atlantic salmon but of the people with whom its life is closely intertwined. Our Mission Statement, which has been developed over three decades, is as follows:

(a) To collect, preserve, protect, record, research and interpret objects, photographs and documents relative to the Atlantic salmon as they pertain to the importance of this species to the rivers and to the people of New Brunswick and beyond.

(b) To make these objects, photographs, and documents available to the public for both their education and enjoyment through the use of temporary and permanent exhibits that accurately recount the impact of the Atlantic salmon on the cultural and economic history of New Brunswick and beyond.

(c) To utilize these artifacts as the cornerstone of various special events specifically designed to focus the public’s attention on the Atlantic salmon and, by so doing, to secure support for the Museum’s ongoing programs.
