Scope and content

This series contains printed materials collected by members of the Chandler family. Included is a book titled “How to Find the Stars and their Use at Sea” by W.H. Rosser which discusses the constellations and their history, how to find these constellations, useful mathematical formulas for navigating at sea using the stars, and common problems related to time, longitude, and compass error. The inside cover of the book contains a note: “To my dear nephew Henry from William B. Chandler, chief officer of the H.M.S. Gullineer, Xmas 1888”. The last pages of the book have mathematical equations written on them, and a brief diary-like account of sailing during a snow storm. Inside the textbook there are also handwritten notes on astronomy.
