History
Sergeant Archie Stevens, born in Hopewell, New Brunswick. On an advance from Mezzano to San Alberto, this Senior NCO Officer commanded one of the two 105 millimeter gun tanks in his squadron. Stevens moved his tank to an exposed position and fired point blank into the strong point, destroying houses and causing the enemy to retire across the Naviglio Canal, leaving behind between thirty and forty casualties and one anti gun tank knocked out. The advance on the left flank was then able to continue. During a series of actions, this non-commissioned officer has shown great courage and initiative and has at all times been an inspiration to his squadron. He received the Military Medal. Sgt. Stevens was the first casualty after the regiment returned home. He came to Sussex, New Brunswick, and within a month after arriving home, he had a Tonsillectomy operation from which he never recovered. Stevens was the first military funeral after returning home from war.
