Notice biographique

Allison Graham Patterson was born on 24 November 1912 at Burlington, Nova Scotia, the son of Rev. Harry and Laurie May (Graham) Patterson. He first entered Mount Allison in 1930, studying organ under Dr. Harold Hamer. He graduated with a B.Sc. in 1934 and in 1936 received the first Bachelor of Education degree ever conferred by Mount Allison University. Following graduation he taught at Lequille, Nova Scotia and later did graduate studies in music at the Toronto Conservatory and the Royal College of Music in London, England. In 1938 he returned to Mount Allison and joined the music faculty, first as piano teacher and later as organ teacher. He retired forty years later in 1978. He was organist and choir director at the Sackville United Church between 1938 and 1946. Less than a month before his death he was conferred with the honorary degree of Doctor of Music. He died on 15 November 1981 at Alberton, Prince Edward Island. He was buried in Sackville, New Brunswick.

Historique de la conservation

Papers transferred to the Archives from the Mount Allison University Music Library by Sonia Anderson, 18 August 1988, containing papers of both Allison Patterson and Ethel Peake. Several items have both the signature of Ethel Peake and an "Allison G. Patterson" stamp on them, or a note to indicate that they were loaned or given to the other. The contents were re-organized during a re-description project conducted in 2012.

Portée et contenu

Fonds consists of organ music, musical programmes, an organ exam and promotional items as well as lists of publications and sound recordings available at the Mount Allison University Music Library, an address to alumni, a guest book from a music reunion in Toronto, an article about Francis Chaplin, details about student music examinations in 1967 and photographs. The contents of the fonds include references to Mary Densmore, Grace Bumbry, Clayton Hare, and Dorothy Swetnam. The contents of the fonds document Allison Patterson's interest in music, his professional career, and his musical relationship with Ethel Peake.

Classement

The fonds was re-processed and re-arranged in January of 2012 by Karissa LaRocque according to the Canadian Rules for Archival Description. The old finding aid can be consulted for original listing details but it was decided to expand the description to include additional information that would be of benefit to interested researchers. The records were separated from the Ethel Peake materials to protect the provenance of the items.
