Macaulay, Horace and Margaret

Horace Robinson Macaulay joined the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1941. he went on to serve as a radar technician in England with the Royal Air Force telecommunications Flying Unit, during World war II. Margaret served during the war with the ciphers with the Royal Signals Corps. She met Horace and they were married in 1943. They returned to Canada in 1946.

Parkin, Annie

Annie Parkin was born 15 April 1922, Escombe County Durham, England. Her family moved to Canada in 1926. They arrived at Mount Hebron, King's County New Brunswick. They moved to Sussex in c. 1943. She joined the Royal Canadian Air Force (Woman's division) February 1943. She proceeded to basic training at Rockcliffe, Ontario before being posted to Hagersville Ontario. She became ill and died in the Christie Street Military Hospital. 16 members of the CWAC paraded from Camp Sussex to her funeral, held at Wallace Funeral Parlor.

Vincent, Ernest Charles

Ernest Charles Vincent was born in Fairvale, King's County, New Brunswick 6 May 1897. He lived on Saint Andrew Street, Saint John. He enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force 20 January 1916, he was 19 years of age. Prior to enlistment he had worked as a clerk. He was in the 115th Battalion. Ernest embarked from Halifax, Nova Scotia, 23 July 1916 on the SS Olympic. He was promoted to Corporal 21 January 1916. He was further promoted to Sergeant 8 July 1916. He received his final promotion to Lieutenant 25th March 1917. He was discharged in 1918 and returned to Canada.

Lawrence, Norman

Norman Lawrence trained as a boxer under Hugh Paris before joining the armed forces. He was the army's best middle weight boxer between 1958-1960, winning four championships. Paddy was inducted into the Pictou County Sports Hall of Fame, Nova Scotia 26 September 2009.

Sussey, Doug

Captain (retired) Doug Sussey was an active member of the Tobique 594 Royal Air Cadets, serving with the organization for five years. He was honoured by the Cadets at their 11th Annual Parade Celebrations. He ensured that new challenges were open to the cadets, including marksmanship team and biathlon.

McGowan, Donald

"Donald Frost MacGowan,
a descendant of United Empire Loyalists William and Sarah Frost, was born in Hampton. In 1960, Don was one of seventeen persons residing in the Kings County region who responded to a recommendation of the New Brunswick Historical Society that a new local historical society be formed for and in such region for the purpose of vigorously obtaining and preserving objects and information of historical value. The unincorporated society with those seventeen persons who, each having paid the one-dollar membership fee, commenced holding meetings with Lieutenant Colonel Otty Corbett as president, Don MacGowan as vice president and Grace Aiton as secretary. The society was later incorporated under the name “Kings County Historical and Archival Society Inc”.
Don has always been active in a variety of sports and community endeavours. Following high school, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Mount Allison University in 1955, honouring in history. At Mount Allison he was very active in student affairs and was selected to be the valedictorian for his graduating class.
Following his Mount “A” graduation he was awarded a Beaverbrook Scholarship in law at the University of New Brunswick Law School. Don received his law degree in 1958 and was admitted to the New Brunswick Bar in the same year. He practiced law for 54 years out of offices first in Sussex and later in Saint John. Don was awarded a Queens Counsel designation in 1987 and a life membership in the New Brunswick Bar in 2008.
In 1954 Don earned his military commission in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. Later he served as the Adjutant in the 8th Canadian Hussars.
Don served as the New Brunswick Consul for the Kingdom of Norway for a period of 28 Years. In his early career, Don participated in various community charitable endeavours, particularly the Canadian Cancer Society.
For over 50 years, Don MacGowan has been an active and valued supporter of the Kings County Historical and Archival Society, Inc" (King's County Museum)

Graham, Christopher (Kit) Francis Allen

Kit Graham was born in Montague, PEI, on September 24, 1920, he was a son of the late Rev. Christopher and Ruth (Allen) Graham. Kit served in World War II serving in England, Italy and North West Europe with the Fifth Canadian Armored Regiment - 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) in the rank of Captain. Kit was en route to Italy when the convoy came under air attack. His ship, the Monterey, played an important part in the rescue of nursing sisters and soldiers from the SS Santa Elena. After the war he served for 8 years as Recruiting Officer in Saint John. Past President of the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) Regimental Association, Life Member of Canadian Armoured Corp., Honorary Colonel of the 8th Canadian Hussars (Princess Louise's) Regiment,

Hauser, R. J.

Gunner R J Hauser joined the Army on June 24, 1940. At that time he was stationed at CFB Petawawa. He later travelled by train to Sussex and completed his training at Camp Sussex. He has compiled 4 photo albums with a complete history of his time in Ontario, then on to Sussex and finally when he boards the train to go to Halifax and then by ship to Scotland.

Ellis, H. R. S. (Tim)

Harold Robertson Scarff (Tim) Ellis was born April 18, 1916 He joined the Regiment in 1940 and served during the entire Second World War. In July 1941, Tim Ellis came to Camp Sussex. He went overseas with the Regiment and in Italy he moved up to A/Major and took over Headquarters Squadron. Before the battle at Coriano he was posted to B Squadron. During a series of actions during the battle of Coriano Ridge, this officer?s brilliant handling of his squadron, his boldness, skill and initiative at all times earned him the Distinguished Service Order on September 14, 1944.. Tim was Honorary Lt.-Col of the Regiment from 1992-1995. Tim Ellis died May 10,2011

Gamblin, Harold S.

Harold Seymour Gamblin
Harold Gamblin was a collector of military memorabilia . Harold Seymour Gamblin was born December 21, 1897 in Cody's, Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada, and died June 16, 1986 in Sussex, Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada. He married LULU PEARL NORTHRUP August 24, 1921 in Lower Millstream, New Brunswick, Canada. She was born February 05, 1903 in Coles Island, Queens County, New Brunswick, Canada, and died March 17, 1988 in Sussex, Kings County, New Brunswick, Canada. Lieutenant Colonel Gamblin served in WW 1 from 1915 to 1919. Following this he served with the 8th Princess Louise's (NB) Hussars and was the commanding officer of the regiment at the outbreak of WW 2. He mobilized the 4th Canadian Motorcycle Regiment (8NBH) and commanded it during 1940 and 1941 when it was re-organized as the 5th Canadian Armored Regiment (8NBH). In 1941 he proceeded overseas in command of the regiment, remaining in England until 1942 when he returned to Canada following hospitalization for a bronchial problem contracted during WW 1. Following his return to Canada, he was in command of the C.O.T.C. at Mount Allison University, Sackville, during 1942 and 1943. In 1943 he was posted to the adjutant-general's branch, National Defence Headquarters, serving on the Officers Selection and Appraisal Board for Military District No. 7 for the remainder of the war. He retired from active service with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in 1945 and was posted to his former regiment, the 8th Princess Louise's Hussars (reserve). Lieutenant Colonel Gamblin served with the Soldier's Settlement board during 1919 and 1920. After a period of farming at Cody's, he returned to the Soldier's Settlement Board (then the Veteran's Land Act) serving until 1959 when he retired to the homestead at Cody's.
