Ferris, Ron Garfield

Ronald Garfield Ferris February 23,1922 - December 31 2008.Ferris a Veteran of World War 2 served as a Captain with the 8th Hussars (Princess Louise's) regiment. he was a member of the No 174 Saint John Civilian Rifle Association. He captured the New Brunswick sporting rifle Championship in 1940-1941 and taught rifle shooting to the Army Cadet Corp #1691 which he was instrumental in forming.

Festival of Contemporary French Theatre

The first Festival of the Contemporary French Theatre took place in March 1970 in the Manning Room of the Chapel and was produced and directed by Liliane Welch and Tim Wiles. The plays produced were Endgame, directed by Wiles, and Un saison en enfer = A season in hell, directed and produced by Wiles and Welch. Wiles also delivered three lectures. The theme of the festival was ‘Revelution’ [sic].

The second Festival of the Contemporary French Theatre took place in March 1971 in the theatre of the Student Centre and was produced and directed by Liliane Welch and Tim Wiles. The plays produced were Ubu Roi and The empire builders. Wiles, from Stanford University, also delivered three lectures relating the theme of the event and focused on French drama. The theme of the festival was ‘Insatia.’

The festival does not appear to have continued after 1971.

Fillmore, Lemeul

Lemuel Fillmore was a teacher in the Dorchester district at the Westmorland County school, New Brunswick. He kept a class report from 11 November 1850-10 May 1851). There were 25 students in the class, 18 boys and 7 girls ranging in age from 6 to 22 years old.

Lemuel Fillmore was born at Jolicure, Westmorland County, New Brunswick, in 1832, the son of Lemuel Fillmore (1803-1836) and Lydia Bennett (b. 1811).

First Church Christ, Scientist (Saint John, N.B.)

The First Church Christ, Scientist in Saint John, New Brunswick, was located in a building at 121 Germain Street in 1929 and remained there until October 1930, when it moved to 263 Germain Street. It remained at that address until 1983.

At the Church's February 1930 meeting, the Building Committee reported they had about $10,000.00 in bonds and cash in the bank plus pledges on hand. The Committee was authorized at the meeting to call for tenders and proceed with the first unit of their church. The building was completed in October 1930, free of debt and the first service was held on the 3rd Sunday of October 1930.

First Hillsborough Baptist Church

Among the early settlers of Hillsborough, New Brunswick, was Heinrich Stief who arrived in the 1780s. His son, Henry (d. 1826) anglicized the name to Steeves and began preaching as a Baptist around 1795.

Joseph Crandall, a great preacher and evangelist of the time, visited Hillsborough in 1822 and began baptizing. By Christmas, there were 77 members of the Baptist church. Joseph Crandall and Steeves both preached in the Church, though Steeves was probably the pastor. In 1834, William Sears became the regular pastor of the church and in 1844 was succeeded by James Wallace.

Between1848 and 1860, three more churches were created from First Hillsboro Baptist Church. Second Hillsboro was organized at Dawson Settlement in 1852, Third Hillsboro at Demoiselle Creek in 1855, and Fourth Hillsborough at Baltimore in 1857.

In 1852, John Hughes became pastor until 1861. He was followed by Levi Marshall in 1862, then James Austen Smith in 1863. In 1867, Rev. W.T. Carey took over the church. Rev. J.C. Blakney came in 1883, and he was followed by Rev. W. Camp in 1886. He stayed with the church until at least 1895.

Miss DeWolfe, a missionary in India, organized a Women's Baptist Missionary Aid Society in 1875. The Young People's Society of Christian Endeavour was started in 1891 to promote an earnest Christian life among its members.

On 13 June 1910, fire consumed the church and the parsonage which were rebuilt over the next two years.

Fish family (Newcastle)

The Fish family of the greater Newcastle area - the community and surrounds of the Miramichi River, New Brunswick region - long held a respected and affluent position in the business and political arenas. James A. Fish Sr., the original owner of the Fish family's first business concern, a Blackville-Miramichi general store and smithy or blacksmith shop, was originally an American. Born in West Waterville, Maine, in 1812, when James A, Fish was 4-years-old he and his family moved to the Blackville, New Brunswick area, in what was then dubbed the "Forks". He lived within that locality for the rest of his life.

After establishing the mercantile business, James A. Fish expanded his business concerns to a large lumbering mill, as well as maintaining the family farm and lands. On 20 March 1844, he married Elizabeth McAllister, of Blissfield Parish, and they had 10 children. James Fish was a member of the Freemasons for 25 years, and maintained good standing within the Masonic order.

After James A. Fish, Sr.'s death, in 1897, his two sons, James O. Fish, Jr. and C. C. Fish, took over the family businesses. They continued the general store until the mid-1930s, when the records in possession of the Archives end. What was originally the Fish family store has, in recent years, been replaced with new stores and a new building. During the course of their various enterprises, the Fish family sons served at both the municipal and provincial levels of government, and maintained strong business and social ties to their home.

Fisher, Arthur Maxwell

Arthur Maxwell Fisher was born in Woodstock, New Brunswick, in 1887, the son of Williamson Fisher (1847-1913) and Annie Emery Fisher (1857-1932). Arthur received a public school education, graduated in 1905 from the Carleton County Grammar School and earned a medical degree . Arthur Fisher married Mildred Carvell. When the First World War began, he became a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. On 12 October 1917, he was killed in action and was buried at the Baird Cottage Cemetery in Boesingha, Belgium. He was posthumously awarded the order of St. Sava, 5th Class.

Fisher, Barbara

Barbara Fisher is the wife of Peter Fisher. They lived in Upper Point de Bute, on land bordering the Baptist Church cemetery. In 1996, when the church was sold and moved, Fisher carried out research into the cemetery which was located on the same lot as the church building.

Fisher, Lewis

Of Loyalist descent, Lewis Fisher was born 11 February 1827 to Henry Fisher (1780-1855) and his second wife, Rebecca (Brown) Lawrence (1793/94-1867). He married Elizabeth Moore, and they had no fewer than 4 children: Margaret Elizabeth (Fletcher, d. 1893), Emily, Frances Edith, and Alice (Greer). The Fishers lived in New Maryland, York County, where Lewis Fisher farmed and operated a general store. He was a parish councillor for a number of years and, in 1871, served as postmaster. In later years, he held the office of accessor of rates and taxes. Lewis Fisher died on 18 March 1897 and was buried in St. Mary The Virgin Anglican Church Cemetery in New Maryland.
