Herbert Mariner Wood

Herbert Mariner Wood was born on May 10, 1877 to Josiah and Laura Sophia (Trueman). He married Ethel Blanche Sumner on June 1, 1905, in Westmorland, New Brunswick. They had two children: Margaret Sumner Wood (1908) and Josiah Wood (1907). He died in 1966 in Sackville, New Brunswick. Herbert Mariner Wood’s father, Josiah Wood, purchased the Crane House in 1867 from William Crane. When he eventually passed away in 1927 the house went to his eldest son, Herbert. After a fire in 1939 burned the mansard roof he replaced it with the original style of 1836 Georgian style and renamed it Cranewood. Herbert attended Cornell University located in Ithaca, New York, USA between the years 1901-1905, but may have started at the university earlier than 1901.

Morice Bros.

The Morice Family was established in Middle Sackville New Brunswick when John Morice (1785-1860) purchased land in Middle Sackville from John Harper in 1821. Eventually Morice Mill Pond would be an integral center of flourishing business in Middle Sackville. Morice Mill Pond is thought to be one of the oldest industrial sites in Canada. The Morice family added a carding mill to the already existing grist mill and saw mill during the first half of the 1800s. Eventually this area would be inherited by John Morice’s three grandsons, John (1859-193-?), Charles (1865-1933), and William (1868-1943). These three brothers would make up the Morice Bros. They later established a woodworking business where they manufactured doors, windows, threshing and grain cleaning machines, as well as household furniture. In later years, the Morice Bros. were involved with the production of ice and operated a summer rental boat business that included a gasoline launch, sail boats, and rowboats.

Margaret 'Marcie' (Morice) Fullerton

Margaret Elizabeth “Marcie” (Morice) Fullerton was born on 25 February 1920 in Middle Sackville, New Brunswick to John Wright Morice (1902-1981) and Edith (Campbell) Morice (1901-1972). She was educated in local schools and graduated from the Middle Sackville Superior School. She later attended the Mount Allison Commercial College where she completed her certificate in secretarial studies in 1937. A lifelong resident of Middle Sackville, New Brunswick. Marcie was the secretary to five Mount Allison University presidents between 1945 and 1986 including: George J. Trueman, W.T. Ross Flemington, Bill Crawford, Laurence Cragg, and Guy MacLean. She married Charles Russell Fullerton (1923-2007) on April 24, 1943 and the couple had one child, David Fullerton. Marcie was President and founder of the Sackville branch of The Business and Professional Woman’s club. Marcie had a passion for collecting textual records and photographs pertaining to the history of Sackville. She died in Saint John, New Brunswick on 11 April 2015. She is interred in the Westcock Cemetery in Westcock, New Brunswick.

Chandler Family

Henry Chandler was born in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, on July 30 1875. He was the son of Henry A. Chandler of P.E.I and Ellen (McGregor) Chandler, whose birthplace is unknown. The family moved to New Brunswick when Henry Chandler was very young, and his youth was spent in Woodstock where he received his early education. Henry Chandler began his career as a crown lands surveyor with the government of N.B., a position he held for several years before joining the Canadian Pacific Railway as a civil engineer. He held this position for 35 years, during which he resided in Woodstock, Moncton, and Saint John. He was also a member of the New Brunswick Rifle Association, and coached the N.B. team on several occasions. Henry Chandler married Isabella Miller from Ottawa, Ontario on September 3 1894 in Westmorland County, and the two had many children including Nora Chandler, John Allington Chandler, Charles Edward Chandler, William Saunders Chandler, and Gordon Allington Chandler. Henry Chandler died on September 5 1951, and is buried in the Woodstock Rural Cemetery.
Nora Chandler married Clifford Alton Rafuse on September 18, 1930 in Woodstock, N.B. John Allington Chandler became a lumberman and lumber inspector, and married Ruby Mary Mercer on February 12 1928 in Campbellton, N.B. He died on April 4 1936 in Woodstock, N.B. Charles Edward Chandler was an assistant station agent and later a telegrapher who married Morgan Nellie on February 1 1930 in Andover, N.B. He later divorced Morgan Nellie and married Eva Mae McGrath on July 18 1941, and later died on May 7, 1952, in Edmundston, N.B. Throughout the life of William Saunders Chandler he was a construction labourer, a clerk, and a painting contractor. He married Annie Stevens on May 15 1927 in Wakefield, N.B. After she passed away, he married Mildred Kathleen Currie on November 18 1930 in Richmond, N.B. Lastly, after she passed away he married Minnie Beryl Nickerson on October 14 1967 in Rothesay, N.B.
William Saunders Chandler and Mildred Kathleen Currie had at least three children. In 1935 they had a son named William Allington Chandler. He would work for the Sun Life Assurance Co., and married Janet Lang Henry on October 10 1959. In 1937 William and Mildred Chandler had a son named Ross Allan Chandler, who would become a teacher in St. Andrews, N.B. He married Barbara Anne Holt on September 16 1961. Lastly, William and Mildred had a son named John Wayne Chandler in 1939, who became an R.C.M.P. officer. He married Beverly Joan Stone at Rothesay, N.B. on December 28 1963.

Edith Holmes

Edith Holmes was born in 1910 as one of 10 children born to Horace and Barbara (Johnston) Holmes. She lived with her parents at 145 Frederick Street in St. Andrews, New Brunswick, and never married. After Horace Holmes passed away in 1945 and Barbara Holmes passed away in 1960, Edith Holmes built a retirement home for herself at 155 Frederick Street. She worked as a domestic servant and was the personal maid for the Honorable Mrs. Redmond who lived at Fort Tipperary in St. Andrews during the summer, and the Ritz in Montreal during the winter. Throughout her life Edith Holmes was involved with the Baptist Church, the Pythian Sisters, the Senior Citizens Club, and other community organizations. During her retirement she was known for dabbling in oil painting and word carving.

Jane Garnett

Jane (Welock) Garnett was born around 1946 to George and Jean Welock, the owners of the Loon Bay Lodge. Loon Bay Lodge is a hunting and fishing retreat located along the St. Croix River in the parish of Saint James, Charlotte County, New Brunswick. Jane (Welock) Garnett grew up in this unique environment, after her parents purchased the lodge and established it as a business in 1948. Her memories of this experience are recorded in a book titled “Loon Bay Lodge: A History & Memoir”. Later, she would marry Peter A. Garnett, an accountant who assisted her mother Jean Welock with the operation of Loon Bay Lodge after George Welock passed away in May of 1976. She also worked for a time as a secretary on the Charlotte County Archives Board of Directors.
